Okay, so funny story. Well, it was NOT funny until yesterday evening and now it's only semi-funny because I'm not quite over it and sure the threat is gone. But still, I'm sure it will be fine.
At the beginning of this month, I was desperate so I started applying for random jobs on Craigslist. Really? What was I thinking? One of the jobs I had applied for was a personal assistant to....someone/thing? I sent them my resume (which unfortunately has my email/address/phone on it). I get an email back telling me what this "person" does for a living, the job requirements, AND that I have been hired (along with my first job assignment). I email back saying that I don't accept jobs from people that I have never met and if they want to interview me to let me know. End of story, I hear nothing else....
Fast forward to yesterday...there is a knock on the door at about 8:30am. Its the FedEx man with a package! Luke opens it and it's a random $3,200 check from people I have never heard of. So I call my mom (because moms know everything). Well, she was kinda stumped too! Take it to the bank was the advice. So, I took it to the bank. They told me that if I don't know who the people are and was not expecting it, to shred it. So, I came home and shredded it. End of story....
No, not end of story. I get an email from this crazy personal assistant person telling me that I will have a check delivered to my house today, to cash it, keep some for myself and send the rest to an unnamed orphanage Western Union. Uh, yeah. So I email back and politely explain that I do not work for them as I explained in a previous email and to leave me alone.
In the midst of all this, I had a interview at a local school district about subbing (which by the way, was good! I will be subbing there!). On my way home from the interview, my fancy new iPhone dings to tell me I have a new email. I look and it's the crazy personal assistant again! This time saying "You had made a promise to fulfill your job duties. Complete the assignment TODAY or ELSE!" I may have overreacted BUT, I immediately burst into tears and call my mom (cause they know everything right?) I would have called my dad but he probably would have gotten in the truck, drove to KC and smuggled me back to Illinois! Mom tells me to call the police, just to be safe. I get off the phone with her, call Luke at work (crying still) and he says, "Sorry call the police." So I call the police station. Oh that poor man, I'm sure he deals with crazy people all the time and I think I was one of them yesterday. He explains there isn't much they can do, checks on the email address and names on the FedEx package and gets nothing. He tells me to write an email back, stating that the police were notified and that I would file harassment charges if I heard from them again. So that is what I did. And I haven't heard back...yet.
I'm still a little nervous, provided that these freaks know my address and my phone number. But so far, so good. I was telling someone at work about it and I mentioned that where I grew up, strangers couldn't find your house because we didn't have street addresses and lived in the middle of nowhere. Kind of wishing for that right about now.
I did learn some valuable lessons though: #1)Don't apply for jobs on Craigslist. #2)Don't accept packages from people you have never heard of. #3)I feel comfortable with my police force here, he was very nice and patient with crazy me. And most importantly #4)STOP being crazy and applying for random jobs, WAIT for the Lord to show you His will. Oh, the lessons I am learning in the big city. :)
